We are always looking for ways in which to improve academic achievement, especially in the areas of reading and mathematics. According to recent research, programs that were designed to enhance social and emotional support among children also improved academic performance.
In an article published in the Journal of Educational Psychology, a research team based at New York University reported that a program that was designed to reduce behavior problems among low-income students in kindergarten and first grade had the added benefit of improving their performances in math and reading.
The researchers suggested that their findings indicate that there is value in well-designed interventions to improve education.
The results of this research align well with the approach used by Liberty Traditional:
- Character Curriculum – The character curriculum is based upon basic values called the Six Pillars of Character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring and citizenship.
- Parent Involvement – Teachers work directly with parents. Parents are asked to monitor test scores, homework and attendance on a daily basis.
- Uniforms – A dress code policy that is enforced where uniforms allow our students to focus on their education instead of designer labels and fashion trends.
Numerous studies have previously reported that when children grow up in economically disadvantaged situations there is an increased likelihood that they will start school facing more challenges than their peers who have more economic advantages.
At the same time, research has shown that children from poor families often have inadequate social-emotional skills at the start of school. This can also affect their abilities to learn.
We feel that our curriculum is designed to answer some of the questions raised by the researchers at New York University. At the same time, we are always looking for insights as to how we can do an even better job educating the young people who attend Liberty Traditional.
