March is the month when Spring finally arrives, and while we\u2019re all happy about that, it\u2019s also the month in which we celebrate women\u2019s history and acknowledge the progress made in teaching the developmentally disabled. Let\u2019s look at the significance of recognizing the achievements of both these groups.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Women\u2019s History Month<\/b><\/a><\/p>\n

This year\u2019s theme of National Women\u2019s History Month is \u201cLeading the Change: Women Shaping a Sustainable Future,\u201d This theme highlights women who are rebuilding outdated systems to ensure long-term sustainability, including environmental, economic, and societal, with the goal of creating a more resilient future.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Check out this timeline that shows the long history of celebrating the many contributions and achievements which women have given us:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

1908<\/b> – Over 15,000 women marched through the streets of New York City demanding better pay and voting rights.<\/span><\/p>\n

1909<\/b> – The first <\/span>Women\u2019s Day<\/span><\/a> was organized in the United States by the Socialist Party. This day was to remember the women\u2019s strike that took place a year earlier in New York City.<\/span><\/p>\n

1911<\/b> – The Socialist International established an International Women\u2019s Day to honor women\u2019s rights in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.<\/span><\/p>\n

1920<\/b> – The <\/span>19th Amendment<\/span><\/a> granted women the right to vote in America.<\/span><\/p>\n

1975<\/b> – The United Nations began celebrating International Women\u2019s Day on March 8, 1975.<\/span><\/p>\n

1978<\/b> – The first<\/span> Women\u2019s History Week<\/span><\/a> started in the school district of Sonoma, California. Presentations, contests, and a parade were held all week to bring attention to women\u2019s rights in history.<\/span><\/p>\n

1980<\/b> – President Jimmy Carter declared the first official Women History Week for March 2-8.<\/span><\/p>\n

1987<\/b> – Because many states had already been dedicating a full month to celebrating women, in 1987 Congress passed a proclamation that officially established March as Women\u2019s History Month.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
